Three bedrooms - sleeps 4 + 1
The kitchen in the Windtor Cottage has been modernised and incorporates an electric cooker and a microwave. There is an adjoining larder with a fridge freezer and washing machine. There is a downstairs toilet.
There are 3 bedrooms one of which is a small single bedded room and is located downstairs. The upstairs bedrooms are large with views over the surrounding countryside and beautiful cottage garden. One is furnished with a double bed while the other has twin beds.
There is a modern bathroom, shower and toilet upstairs with commanding views over the moors.
The epic Steven Spielberg movie ‘War Horse’ was filmed opposite the cottage and Spielberg seemed genuinely awed, declaring: "I have never before, in my long and eclectic career, been gifted with such an abundance of natural beauty as I experienced filming War Horse on Dartmoor." And here is the article that appeared in the Independent following its launch.
Dogs
We do appreciate that the holiday cottage makes a wonderful base for dog owners and so dog owners are most welcome at Windtor. There is a section in the welcome pack at the cottage detailing standard expectations and we do ask dog owners to respect the moorland codes when exercising dogs. A copy of the booklet is available here: Your dog in the countryside or at this website: Natural England. The increase in the diseases neosporosis and sarcocystosis in livestock and their link to dog faeces has led us to recommend that even on the moor, dog waste is removed or at the very least, safely buried.
Heating and linen
Heating and hot water in the cottage is provided by a modern combination condensing boiler. Linen including towels, sheets, duvet covers, pillow cases and drying up cloths are now provided for all guests. There is a washing machine as well as all the other basics and the cottage provides a traditional yet comfortable break from the pressures of daily life.
Smoking
We operate a no smoking policy in the cottage which we request all of our guests to observe.
Shops and amenities
The Shop on the Green in Widecombe carries some essentials. It also serves as an ‘out-reach’ Post Office. There are two pubs, the Old Inn in the village and the Rugglestone on the road out of the village towards Venton. Both serve excellent food and beverages. The Cafe on the Green has benefited from a recent refurbishment and all reports are excellent. The National Trust shop and Church House are worth a visit as is the magnificent 14th Century St Pancras Church. Both Tesco and Waitrose deliver to the cottage and many of the local smallholders sell vegetables in season.
There is a small playground for children and a tennis court on the edge of the village. A key-code is available at the cottage which gives access to the court in the village. Guests have to provide their own equipment.
There is mobile phone reception for O2 and GiffGaff networks and the cottage telephone receives incoming calls.
